Trivia night, book swap, & 4-H shirts!

Brown and Black Wooden Docor

Monday, January 14, 2019 at 6:30 pm is our General Meeting...chock full of fun activities!

Please note We're meeting at the Yeomalt Classroom (next to the Yeomalt Cabin).

  • Join us for a friendly team competition of Trivia.  It's been fun in the past and we're looking forward to another great game.
  • We're also excited to announce a book exchange.  Please bring a book that you would recommend someone else read (or a few if you would like) and leave with a book.  With the rainy and cold Bainbridge Island winter weather, it's a perfect time to enjoy a new (to you) book!  Feel free to bring fiction or non-fiction.
  • Need a Bainbridge Island 4-H t-shirt?  Have you outgrown your 4-H t-shirt?  We'll be ordering shirts on Monday night but we're also having a t-shirt swap.  Please bring in your too-small shirts to pass along.  Please also bring your checkbook (new 4-H members will be provided a new t-shirt at no cost).

Happy New Year!

We wish all of our 4-H members a wonderful 2019!

As we reflect on our accomplishments since October, it's great to see the many projects that our members have been working on.

  • In Cooking, our members baked delicious pecan pies (including gluten-free) for the annual holiday  party.  Thank you for the delicious treat!
  • Our Poultry and Garden group has been very busy.  They've recently toured a turkey farm and even watched a necropsy.  They did a craft with tillandsia and learned about the care.
  • Our Photography project recently visited the gardens at Bloedel Reserve, capturing some terrific pictures!
  • Our Dog Project has also busy with lots of training and learning new commands at Yeomalt Cabin!
  • Our Leadership project has been learning parliamentary procedures, ice breakers and planning the General Meetings.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our January General Meeting:  January 14, 2019 at 6:30pm at Yeomalt Cabin.

Happy New Year!

Chex Mix Recipe

The 4-H Leadership Project members made Chex Mix while learning Parliamentary Procedures!

We enjoyed this snack at the November General Meeting and you'll find the Chex Mix recipe below, including the modifications made by the Leadership Project.

Chex Mix Recipe:

3 cups Corn Chex
3 cups Rice Chex
3 cups Wheat Chex
1 cup mixed nuts
1 cup bite size pretzels
1 cup garlic flavor bagel chips
6 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

In a large microwavable bowl, mix cereals, nuts, pretzels and bagel chips; set aside.  In small bowl, microwave butter uncovered until melted.  Stir in seasonings.  Pour over cereal mixture and stir until evenly coated.  Microwave uncovered on high 5 to 6 minutes, thoroughly stirring every 2 minutes.  Spread on paper towels to cool.  Store in airtight container.

Leadership modifications:  1) Omitted Wheat Chex and increased Corn and Rice Chex by 1 1/2 cups.  2) Omitted mixed nuts due to allergies.  3) Replaced bagel chips with pita chips.

Enjoy!

Washington State 4-H Know Your Government Conference 2019

The 4-H Know Your Government Conference serves to strengthen the connection between youth and our political and social networks through education, experience, application and inspiration.

KYG is a 4-H sponsored program that allows students to learn about and participate in our country’s three branches of government. During preconference meetings, participants will learn about the Washington State Legislature and how it works interactively with the executive and judicial branches.

We look forward to hosting YOU as we discover together the power and influence of media in today’s society!

4-H enjoyed participating in the Harvest Fair!

Many thanks to our dedicated 4-H members who volunteered their time on Sunday afternoon!  In an apple filled orchard, our members cheerfully ran a fishing pond game for the community and a petting farm for the children!  How exciting for the community to enjoy a treat together with bunnies, dogs, a miniature horse and a goat.
Way to go Bainbridge Island 4-H!

Please join us on October 15th from 6:30 – 7:30 at Yeomalt Cabin (900 Park Avenue NE, Bainbridge Island) to learn about 4-H, enroll in projects online, and talk with project leaders.

All of our members in Bainbridge Island 4-H  join for a monthly general meeting, led by our leadership project.  In addition, independent of the general meetings, individual projects meet with their members on a regular basis.

Our club is pleased to offer the following projects:

  • Cooking (Foods and Nutrition):  Cooking activities are selected over the course of the year based on interest.  In the past, we have made cinnamon rolls, pizza, spaghetti, cakes, pies, steak, cookies, creme brulee, and homemade pasta.
  • Family Living:  A nice introductory project to 4-H for younger members. It includes a little sewing, a little cooking, crafts, and "playing with small children" instruction and practice.
  • Sewing:  Members will develop hand and machine sewing skills. Beginners will practice straight seams and simple projects like a pin cushion or pillow case, then choose projects that interest them. Continuing members may pick their projects.
  • Dogs:  Members learn basic training commands, learn about dog diseases, play games and learn different dog facts and breeds.  In the past, members have also enjoyed baking dog treats, participating with Kitsap Search and Rescue, and visiting with a local veterinarian.
  • Poultry and Gardening:  Topics may include: Disease prevention and treatment,  Cuttings  and chick care, Identification, making planters and simple feeder.  Usually one field  trip each year (i.e. Islandwood).  Gardening projects last year included planting seedlings  at Hannah’s Garden.
  • Photography:  Members meet monthly to learn about equipment, lighting, composition and skill building.  Meetings will be held indoors and on location.  In the past, field trips included Bloedel Reserve, Battle Point Park, and the Bainbridge Island Waterfront.  We are pleased to work with local photographer Dawn Bockus.
  • Leadership:  4-H members from grades 7-12 are welcome.  Members learn about leadership skills and help plan and lead our Bainbridge Island 4H general meetings.  We have learned about Robert’s Rules of Order, mediation, public speaking, communication, and leadership styles in the past.
